This is not an exhaustive guide detailing a variety of status titles that exists in Korea. Depending on industry the titles and structure can vary slightly, however, I believe that what I have explained below is close to the standard for a mid to large sized Korean corporation. This is based on my experience working for a medium sized Korean firm and a Korean government agency. Korean companies corporate positions and jobs are very hierarchical. Your title and more importantly remuneration are based on the length of service and experience as opposed to job role based remuneration. The job titles (직급) is a ranking system and is not explicitly related to job function. This ranking system is based predominately on years of service. To give an example, starting out as a 'graduate' worker at a Korean corporation I was given the title of Sawon (사원) now this title was used for all new starting graduate employees, regardless of job function or department. A new engineer, a new HR worker and a new Sales worker are all 'Sawon'. This system and is ambiguity makes it difficult for non-Koreans to determine what the appropriate title is for a work colleague or business contact, in both English and Korean. In my experience I have come across a wide spectrum of ambiguous English titles written on business cards, I am fortunate to understand Korean and will always check the Korean title to understand the rank of the worker I am meeting.
