5Rs is Refuse Reduce Reuse Repurpose Recycle. How do you adapt it to your everyday living? Most busy commuters stop for a cup of coffee. Have you ever stared at that paper cup and stirring stick and asked yourself how many go to waste everyday? According to carryyourcup.org. if you buy just one cup of coffee or tea in a disposable cup every day, you’ll end up creating about 23 lbs of waste in one year No two cafés produce the same coffee cups – some are made from polystyrene, others from wax-coated paper, and some from compostable, plant-based materials. Polyethylene paper cups are “special”, in the majority of the world; they are not recyclable or compostable. I commend the coffee shops who reuse mason jars as drinking glasses. But how many others do that? Most convenient stores in the busiest of cities still serve hot coffee, latte and cappuchinos in paper cups. Even to-go-plates lined with plastic layers and waxed -coated containers are just as bad as styrofoam plates. The plastic bag reduction and bring your own ecobag campaigns are all good programs in an effort to reduce waste. The only problem we have with paperbags for cold products and groceries is that they get soggy quickly. So consumers spend extra by asking for plastic bag for an extra fee or buying an ecobag if they forget to bring their own.
